The Swedish word 'lagom', pronounced [ˈlɑ̂ːɡɔm] doesn't have a direct equivalent in the English language, but is usually defined as ''just right' (not too much , not too little). It can also be described as 'in moderation' or 'in balance'. You can use it to describe the amount of lime you add to a cosmopolitan cocktail in order for it to be neither not too sour nor too weak a taste. It's also the amount of stress someone with an ambitious career would like to experience in order to feel challenged and stimulated but not become overwhelmed by stress that is toxic and damaging. This word represents a mentality within the Swedish culture that is claimed by many as the reason why Sweden consistently ranks in the top of the happiest countries in the world and why the World Economic Forum claim that Sweden are beating other countries in just about everything. Simply put, us Swedes are quite good at balance of things. Balance in life, in health and balance in greed and ambition. As my passion in life lies in improving wellbeing and happiness for people, my research over the years have taught me that whether you look at wellbeing through the lens of behavioural science, philosophy, psychology or spiritual or religious practices, the common thread of all ways we can leverage to improve wellbeing and happiness, is balance.
Over my 20 years experience as a Change Management consultant helping people cope with change, 15 years as a people leader, 12 years of being a mother and my 47 years experience of being a (Swedish) human being, I have always had a passion for wellbeing and happiness. I have had a lifelong interest and desire to understand what wellbeing really means and how we can improve it. I've realised that this passion is deeply routed in a desire to achieve balance - to live a life that is 'lagom' in every aspect. Over the years I have collected stories, tools and tips from people from all over the world on different ways to improve happiness and wellbeing. The LAGOM way, is how I'd like to pull together everything that I have learned into a framework that I hope trigger something that will be useful to you, your team or your organisation.
Welcome to The LAGOM way.
